On Saturday, September 10, 2005, the West Covina Police Officers' Association sponsored a fundraising event for one of their own, Officer Mike Newton. Officer Newton had contracted a rare, degenerative and disabling disease which affects the brain, spinal chord and peripheral nerves. Officer Newton's medical condition requires him to use a special device that assists him in speaking. The cost of the device was $8,000.00. Insurance would not cover the expense and the cost was too much for his family to afford.
Officer Newton's family suffered a further blow when it was discovered that his wife was also suffering from a serious medical condition. This caused extreme difficulties for the family.
The APOA was made aware of a plea for help for Officer Newton. We responded by voting unanimously to donate $10,000 to the Newton Family Trust, to purchase the special equipment and to help the Newton family at a time when they most needed it.
It was, and is, our honor to provide needed support for a brother officer.
